Privacy

The short version: Guess a Country has no accounts and never asks who you are. Your game progress never leaves your device. No advertising is served and no ad network is connected. The only outside service involved is Google Analytics, and it does not load at all unless you consent to it.

No Accounts

Guess a Country has no sign-up and no login, so there is no user record to hold. We never ask for your name, your email address, or any other detail that could identify you, and there is no form anywhere on the site that submits personal data to us.

What Is Stored, and Where

The game needs to remember a little about your play so a puzzle survives a page reload and your streak survives to tomorrow. That information is written by your own browser into local storage, on your own device, under keys beginning with guessacountry. It is never uploaded, and it cannot be read by us.

An earlier version of the site used a different key prefix. On your next visit the game checks for the old keys, moves anything it finds to the current ones and removes the old entries, so no data is duplicated or orphaned.

None of this is shared with anybody. Your game data is never sent to Google, or to us. Analytics cannot see your guesses, your streak or your answers.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages are read and where the site is slow, so we know what to fix. It is offered on every page, and once you allow it it records:

Analytics is configured in its most privacy-preserving default state. Every advertising storage signal is denied, no advertising network is loaded on this site, we do not build audiences or remarketing lists, and we do not send any of your game activity, guesses or answers to Google. The data reaches us only as aggregate numbers: which page was viewed how many times, and how long it took to load.

Google acts as the controller of that data under its own privacy policy. You can read it at policies.google.com/privacy, and you can opt out of Google Analytics entirely with the Google Analytics opt-out browser extension. User-level data is retained by Google for 14 months by default.

Cookies

The site itself sets no cookies of its own — there is no sign-in cookie and no preference cookie. Cookies do arrive from one third party above:

To refuse these, use the consent banner that appears on your first visit, or the Cookie settings link in the footer at any time. You can also block cookies in your browser, use the Google Analytics opt-out extension, or enable “Delete cookies and site data when you close all windows” in a strict-tracking mode. Blocking them stops analytics from loading; the game itself is unaffected. Every cookie is listed by name and lifetime on the cookie page.

Nothing is set until you agree. Analytics has its own switch, the default is off, and declining prevents the script being loaded at all rather than letting it run and discarding what it collects afterwards. Your answer is kept in local storage under guessacountry_consent, which is never sent with your requests.

Server Logs

Like any web host, the infrastructure serving these pages records ordinary request information such as IP address, user agent, requested URL and timestamp in short-lived server logs used for security and troubleshooting. These logs are not combined with game data, are not used to build a profile, and are not used for advertising purposes. Keeping a minimal operational log is standard practice for any site that is online, and this is the only other place a technical record of your visit exists.

Third-Party Links

The site may link to another website. Once you follow such a link you are on that site's privacy policy, not ours, and we have no visibility into what it collects.

Sharing Results

If you choose to use the share dialog, the result text is placed on your clipboard or sent to a social network you selected. That action goes directly from your device to that platform and is governed by its privacy policy. The share summary contains no country names, so posting it cannot reveal the answer to anyone else.

How to Erase Everything

Your game data is entirely under your control: clear your browser data for this site, or clear local storage for this origin, and it is gone immediately. We have no copy.

For analytics, deleting the cookies described above removes what that service can tie to your device. Google also keeps aggregate reporting about visits, and that cannot be deleted from your browser; to request deletion of data Google holds, use the tools linked in the About page and Google's own “My Account” privacy controls.

The trade-off is worth stating plainly: your streak, statistics and solve history do not follow you to another device or browser. That is the cost of having no account, and it is a deliberate choice — see the methodology page for how the game handles state.

Playing Without Storage

If you block local storage, the game still works. You lose the resumable puzzle, the saved statistics, the streak and the local leaderboard, and nothing else. No functionality on this site requires storage to be enabled.

Children

The site is suitable for all ages and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children — we do not ask anyone their age and have no accounts. Because the game itself never requests identifying information from anyone, there is nothing for us to request, export or delete. The analytics described above loads only for visitors who have agreed to it, and can be withdrawn at any time, so we minimise it as far as the underlying tools allow rather than relying on an implied agreement.

Your Rights

Data protection regimes grant rights such as access, correction, deletion and portability. For your game data we hold nothing: anything you have entered exists only in your own browser, and you can read, change or erase it at any time using your browser's controls. The one preference we keep is your consent answer, held locally under guessacountry_consent, which you can inspect or erase the same way. For analytics data, that data is held by Google rather than by us, and you can access and delete it using Google's own tools — the opt-out extension linked above, and the “My Activity” and “My Information” sections of your Google account. If you have a question about this page specifically, the About page explains how to reach us.

Changes to This Policy

This policy is rewritten whenever the site changes in a way that affects your data, before that change goes live — not afterwards. The “last reviewed” date below always reflects the current version. If the site ever adds a new analytics provider, a new advertising network, or anything that requires an account, this page will say so before that service starts running.
